February 12, 2009, 11:00pm. Farrell Design-Build mobilizes for emergency fix at Folsom Dam water pipe collapse. Joining emergency crews with Abide International, Syblon Reid, and Teichert, Farrell installed Chance Helical Mini-piles to resist water hammer forces on the 42" water pipe created by the emergency 24" bypass pipe. Brian Armstrong lead a crew of Jack Hindman, James Patterson, Kenney Winters, and Kyle Wallace to mobilize after a few phone calls between 5 and 6 pm. Farrell really got out there and provided a fix that could be loaded immediately after installation. No delay for concrete or grout to set, which allowed the Syblon Reid crew to attach the mini-piles to the pipe with cable and turn-buckles to tighten each connection. Civil Engineer Jack Mathews with Carlton Engineering provided mini-pile layout and really took charge with securing the pipe. "The Syblon Reid crews displayed phenomenal organization and action during our short stay at this emergency repair site. Spencer, with Syblon Reid, was a true leader keeping all aspects of the repair operation moving forward. Spencer gave me the heat once or twice when my crew seemed to slow down to change mini-pile tools," says Tom Farrell, "It was quite an experience." Farrell's crew had completed the mini-piles by 3am.
