RIC - Rapid Impact Compaction
Deep Dynamic Compaction
Optimizing Investments Below the Gound!
Rapid Impact Compaction or "RIC" ground improvement is suitable for several applications where the desired result is "densified ground" to depths of 10 to 20 feet (3 to 7 meters). Using the same concept as deep dynamic compaction, RIC densifies and compacts the ground. RIC Application Flyer (pdf)
RIC is best used at sand soil sites where silt and clay contents are low, debris fill sites where excavation is cost prohibitive, and undocumented fill sites where excavation may be 0 to 5 feet to re-engineer the fill.
How does RIC work?: The RIC system uses "controlled impact compaction" of the ground using a 7.7 ton weight dropped 3 to 4 feet onto a 5 foot diameter hammer head delivering about 54,000 ft-lbs of energy per hit. The process is quite rapid, with the mobile CAT 345 carrier allowing quick movement from point to point. The hammer hits the ground at roughly 40 blows per minute. This unique equipment and process is capable of delivering sufficient energy and force to compact and densify the ground to depths of 20 feet and up to 30 feet with ideal soil conditions. Monitoring hammer deflection is key to qualtiy control and detemining improvement at every impact location. As the hammer hits, the displaced deflection is monitored on a per blow basis to determine when compaction of the soil or fill is complete. This method of qualtiy control is reliable and repeatable at every compaction point.
- Installs uniform bearing conditions, increases bearing capacity, and reduces settlement
- Increases density of soil to reduce liquefaction and seismic settlement
- Reduce waste volume and increase future storage capacity
- Improve engineering properties of loose soil and fill
- Installs improved lateral bearing conditions for seismic lateral pile support
- Improves and densifies ground conditions in many applications |
